Accessibility
How this site works to be usable by everyone, in English, Spanish, and French. Last reviewed October 28, 2026.
Our goal
Dr. Hernández-Laroche encouraged us to put accessibility first. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 (opens in a new tab), Level AA, on every page in all three languages. We have tested the site ourselves. It has not yet been reviewed by an outside accessibility specialist.
What we did
- Readable text with strong color contrast, including text over photos.
- Written descriptions for meaningful photos. Decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Real headings, landmarks, and link text that says where each link goes.
- Full keyboard use, a "Skip to content" link, and a visible focus outline that the menu and cookie bar do not cover.
- Pages that still work when text is enlarged to 200% or the screen is only 320 pixels wide.
- Buttons and links large enough to tap, and spoken updates when you change the language or cookie choice.
- Each page marks its language, and passages in another language are identified to help assistive technology choose the right pronunciation.
How we tested
We used automated checks, keyboard-only navigation, simulated 200% text size, narrow-screen reflow checks at 320 pixels, phone and laptop sizes, the high contrast mode in Chrome, and a review of the accessibility information exposed by each page. We have not yet tested real browser zoom, screen readers such as VoiceOver or NVDA, or with people who use assistive technology. Automated scores alone do not prove that a site is accessible, so we will keep testing.
Known limits
- El Centro's Facebook box and Instagram posts are made by those companies. We cannot fully control how accessible they are. The same posts are always available through direct links.
- Links to other websites, such as Flickr, Google Maps, and USC Upstate, follow those sites' own accessibility.
- News and events added through the editing sheet need a photo description and complete text in each language. We check new items when we can.
- The site has no videos or audio right now. Any added later will need captions or a transcript.
